The Valley of Love and Delight?

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Well, almost. It’s on a hill actually. Nearly 300 acres of protected farmland, which has been foreclosed. It’s going for a snip. We saw it go up for auction last November, but weren’t ready to bid. There was some problem with the winning bidder resulting in it being put back on the market.

This place would be a bargain with just the land, and having to build a house and barn from scratch. But for the same price, we could restore the original Queen Anne home, which has been largely untouched in the 107 years of its existance. It’s in rough shape. Really rough shape. But not beyond help.

The grand old house used to be a weekend retreat for the wealthy. There were polo fields and a bandstand, according to the neighbors. It has seven - yes seven - bedrooms. It has three bathrooms, we counted 3 fireplaces. It has three floors of beautiful light rooms. Well, beautiful if you can see past the water damage, holes in the plaster and dirt. I can see. The mouldings, millwork, hardware, built ins, mirrors, tubs, even the clockwork doorbell are still in place. The light fixtures are exquisite. She must have been a beautiful lady in her day.

There is a carriage house attached - wonderful and light, a supply room opposite the first of the basement access doors, a bathroom and a back entry. There is a mudroom coming in from what must once have been the garden. This also opens onto the back hallway where I can just imagine a line of servant bells and coathooks. Just beyond the back door is a kitchen and a butler’s pantry. Then you come to the main hallway on the ground floor. There are three reception rooms on this floor, each with its fireplace graced with mirrored mantel. The front door leads out onto what must have been a magnificent front porch where guests sipped lemonade and watched the polo match in the field opposite.

At the top of the stairs are four spacious bedrooms, each with a generous closet. And a bathroom with a clawfoot tub still in residence. On the landing is a handsome old built-in wardrobe. He’s surely seen a lot. Up one more time to the top of the house where there are three more beds and a bath. The windows on the landing let light stream in.

Behind the house, there is a rather large barn, which was sadly stripped of its insides and its dignity. It needs a new skin, but it has running water, heat, and electricity. It needs new footing and stalls and new light fixtures. It needs some new residents to bring it back to life. They’d be so happy there. The main doors open onto a breathtaking vista overlooking where the polo field probably was. The whole beautiful thing is situated on a 1/4mi. long private road - paved. So quiet.

There are currently hundreds of ornamental trees being grown on the open fields. There was some sort of rental arrangement with the former owner. We don’t know where that stands or will stand. The value of those trees is enormous, perhaps 25-50% of the restoration costs. The restoration would treble the value of the property in one fell swoop. I’m not kidding. There is another property in the neighboring town with 1/3 the land that is going for 4 times the price. Instant equity is something I like.

We’re waiting for the APR document that lays out specifically the restrictions for this particular property. We’re waiting for divine guidance. We’re praying for discernment and wisdom. We would really appreciate yours. In a strange twist, Brian really likes it. That never happens.

Catholic Family Life Conference 2008 (a working title)

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

A while back I posted this, which got a nice response. Later, I posted this, which got some great feedback both publicly and privately. Readers made all kinds of great suggestions and requests including taking the show on the road, so to speak. Then I talked to my friend Bridget and a wonderful idea started to take shape. But life gets busy when you are a mom of many and you are tending a lot of pots on the fire.

But there is an incessant knocking on the same door…

“Niiiiiiiiissa! Do it already.”

Alright, I’m doing it. With God’s help, I’m doing it. Good gracious…

Sometimes I’m a little dense about these calls.

I’m trying to pick a venue in the middle. But anywhere big and beautiful would be fine. Keeping in mind that this is a family retreat and conference. With families. Big families. With lots of kids. Taking up a LOT of room. And we’re Catholic (read: a chapel would be good here). It doesn’t have to be a “Catholic” venue of course, but it would be nice.

Some of the venue suggestions so far:

Marytown in Libertyville, IL
Benedictine University in Lisle, IL (makes me think of scratchy stockings)
Christian Family Living Center in North Carolina. This FABU venue was suggested by both dear Loretta from my local homeschooling group and by Michelle of Magnum Opus Hmmm that’s two votes for this one…
LaSalette Shrine in Attleboro, MA where my daughter Cate will be attending Steuby East this year.
Lake Ashmere in the Berkshires. A beautiful big venue with lots and lots of activities and opportunities for side trips, and room for 500 people to lodge overnight. There is a Catholic Church nearby.
St. Bernard’s Abbey School in Alabama

Please feel free to suggest others. PLEASE. You know that I prefer Benedictine-type places, so dazzle me!

If you are interested in hosting a module (for men, women, parents, children, teens or whole families), please let me know - read the previous posts first to see some suggestions. If you are a Catholic speaker and think you have something you would like to contribute, please read the previous posts linked above and then email me. If you are a Catholic author and would like to participate, hold a book signing, sell some copies at the conference, please email me. If you have a product or service that you think would be of interest to our attendees - you guessed it - email me. And in the certain event that I’ve forgotten some important information, please email me any questions.

And if you would like to come to the conference, by all means, EMAIL ME! :D

May Carol

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

I came across this beautiful piece while searching for music for podcast segments. We are about to bid farewell to the month of May, but I wanted to share it with you today. It should be played at the beginning of the month. A “May bush” is an evergreen sapling that has been stripped of most of its branches and decorated with colored ribbons - a maypole.

Enjoy!

What’s for Tea

Steak au Poivre

Steak au Poivre, wilted spinach, and rice pilaf.

Steak au Poivre

2 lb. strip steak
Black peppercorns, cracked
butter
1 small onion, sliced
1/2 c. beef stock
Cognac or Brandy

Saute onions in butter until soft, remove. Sprinkle steaks generously with peppercorns. Cook steaks to desired doneness and remove to hot platter. Return onions to the skillet, add stock and cognac. Allow to reduce by half, pour over steaks. You can finish with a bit of cream, if you like a heavier sauce, also lovely with sauteed mushrooms of any type. Serve with wilted greens and rice.

Delish! Almost as good as Steak Diane, shich is my all-time fave. Shich?? Holy cow, I must have had a little too much brandy for myself!

First Pip!

The banties are hatching! We’re so excited! I opened the incubator to turn the eggs and discovered a broken shell. Just as I was about to chastise the children for carelessly bumping the table and breaking an egg, I heard a faint “peep” and it quickly dawned on me that our little chickies are arriving!

How joyful to watch the birth of one (or in this case 17) of God’s creatures. He has indeed done a wonderflu job in making every living thing.

All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all.

What Color Green are You?

You Are Apple Green

You are almost super-humanly upbeat. You have a very positive energy that surrounds you.
And while you are happy go lucky, you’re also charmingly assertive.
You get what you want, even if you have to persuade those against you to see things your way.
Reflective and thoughtful, you know yourself well - and you know that you want out of life.

Poetry Friday

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Thanks to Dawn for the impetus!

In honor of our field trip today, a poem by a young Jacqueline Bouvier:

Beach Child by Carolyn Blish
Sea Joy

When I go down by the sandy shore,
I can think of nothing I want more,
Than to live by the booming blue sea
As the seagulls flutter round about me.

I can run about when the tide is out,
With the wind and the sand and the sea all about,
And the seagulls are swirling and diving for fish,
Oh to live by the sea is my only wish.

This poem evokes such a vivid image for me. I can smell the salt air, hear the gulls wheeling and screeching, feel the cold waves wash over my feet while the summer sun beats down upon my head. So strangely prophetic, this poem by a young girl. What an amazing life she would go on to live!

Field Trip Friday

We’re off to the JFK Library today, as well as the Commonwealth Museum, if there is time. The John F. Kennedy Library is one of 11 such Presidential Libraries. It is set in 10 beautiful acres in Boston. The Commonwealth Museum is located directly across the street and houses lots of tidbits of Massachusetts history.

I’ll post more about our trip on my homeshooling weblog later today!
